Baby J's Cheeseburger

When you first walk into Baby J’s, you realize this is no ordinary hot dog joint.  The walls are bright yellow with very formal carved chair and crown molding.  The big, comfortable chairs at the tables formerly resided in a brokerage house conference room.  The granite topped bar overlooks the sparkling clean stainless steel kitchen area.  But you didn’t come for the decor, right?  You came for food!  Expecting burgers and dogs, you look at the menu and find a surprise – yeah, the dogs are there, but in addition there are wraps and salads and sandwiches and and barbecue and brisket, nachos and soups, and to wrap it all up, homemade pies.  Still stuck on a burger?  Try the Jesse burger that’s topped with fried pickles and secret sauce.  The specialty is smoked meats and you can smell the wonders cooking in the smoker as you walk in.
Baby J's Hot Dog

Who, you ask, is Baby J?  He’s Jesse Walker the owner/proprietor who is usually there to greet you with a smile at the door, but might be sitting with friends at a table.  But rest assured he has a constant eye on his clientèle to insure that they are getting everything they came for.  Prior to Baby J’s, Jesse owned the immensely popular Beale Street restaurant on Shore Drive, but six years in, he suffered a traumatic back blowout that required major surgery.  He was unable to keep up the grueling pace required by a large operation, so he shut it down and spent some time recuperating.  All the while, he kept an eye out for a smaller, more intimate venue.  His opportunity came when the owners of Jamar’s hot dogs on Pleasure House Road decided to retire and offered the operation to Jesse.  Jesse and his staff take immense pride in every facet of  the operation of Baby J’s and it shows in the quality of the food and service.

Jesse’s family has deep ties to the music world of Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee.  To learn more, click here.
